EFFECTS OF GLOBALIZATION ON FAMILY TIES :
| Traditional Joint Family | Effect of Globalisation |
Structure | Large, multi-generational household under one roof | Shift towards nuclear or modified joint families due to migration, urban housing, and global work culture |
Functions | Economic cooperation, social insurance, child-rearing, preservation of traditions | Functions outsourced: crèches, old-age homes, insurance; yet families still provide emotional & ritual support |
Interpersonal Relationships | Strong authority of elders, collective decision-making, kinship dominance | Greater individual autonomy, egalitarian relations; digital platforms sustain ties across cities/countries, WOMEN STATUS INCREASED |
Distinction between Household and Family
| Household | Family |
Definition | A household refers to a group of people who live together and share common domestic arrangements, like meals and expenses. | A family refers to individuals related by blood, marriage, or adoption, bound by emotional, social, and legal ties. |
Composition | Can include unrelated members, e.g., tenants, servants, or friends. | Always consists of kin—nuclear (parents & children) or extended. |
Focus | Primarily economic and residential cooperation. | Primarily social, emotional, and cultural bonds. |
Duration | May change frequently with members joining or leaving. | More stable, often lifelong relationships. |
Joint families have not completely disintegrated; rather, they have transformed. Physical separation may occur, but social, cultural, and emotional bonds often persist, indicating an evolutionary shift rather than total disappearance
